This is a Temporary, Full Time vacancy that will close in {x} days at {xx:xx} BST.

The Royal Academy of Arts is delighted to be partnering with the Genesis Foundation to recruit our second cohort of the Genesis Future Curator Programme, a two-year trainee programme. We have two positions available on the programme, both of which will provide a unique and valuable opportunity to gain a 360 degree view of the life of a Curator at the RA, in addition to broader insights of the inner workings of our organisation.

Genesis Future Curator – Exhibitions

This opportunity sits with our Exhibitions Team, who look after a range of activities from planning and curating our world class exhibitions, to the installation and de-installation of the artworks themselves.

On a day-to-day basis the Genesis Future Curator (Exhibitions) will begin by working alongside their line manager on projects within a specific portfolio, and in time progress to working more independently. Given the nature of the work of the department, these will encompass exhibitions at varying stages of development including the culmination of every project and the installation period. Projects scheduled include a major survey exhibition Kerry James Marshall: The Histories, part of a three venue European tour and A Story of South Asian Art: Mrinalini Mukherjee and her Circle, a partnership with the Hepworth Wakefield.

About You

To be considered for this opportunity, you will have gained experience completing an arts related degree and have a keen appetite for learning. Excellent communication skills are key as is fluency in written English and the ability to craft and edit well written and compelling text. You will also possess razor sharp attention to detail, great organisation skills and have the ability to self-motivate and work well under pressure.

We have developed a cohesive skills development programme for this position so that at the point of completion you will have fostered the knowledge and skills for a long and successful career in the art world.

As we have two positions available on this programme, we strongly encourage applicants to consider which opportunity aligns more closely with their personal interests and apply for just one position.

The RA dates way back to 1768 when a group of artists and architects persuaded King George lll to help them to ‘establish a society for promoting the Art of Design'. The original academy, in Pall Mall, was less than 10 meters long. Since then, there have been many changes, though the RA’s core purpose of bringing art and design to a broad audience and championing art and artists still holds true.

Today we are a contemporary art organisation hosting internationally acclaimed exhibitions and through investment in employee training and development, with courses such as Unconscious Bias, LGBTQ+ Awareness, Bystander, and Mental Health First Aid training, we are striving to foster a safe space for everyone through positive action. We also have Employee Network Groups, Ways In Groups, and an Employee Council so every employee has a voice and a way to feel heard by colleagues through the CEO.

The RA is truly a unique place, both as an attraction to our visitors, but also as a workplace. Our people are at the heart of all we do, and we support a broad and inspiring mix of departments; from exhibitions, curators, art handlers, researchers, publishers, and digital to schools and education, visitor welcome, fundraisers, and corporate support.
